I was a candidate in the bencher election in Central South. This is my second time around. I stand only the smallest chance of being elected when the CEO of LawPro, who is also a deputy Judge, and also a bencher of long-standing, is the competition. I, therefore, have nothing to lose by being straightforward with those who would vote for me.
I will need a lot of votes from outside the Central South to be elected, to give me some power, to make some changes that are seriously needed mostly transparency. We already have a guide for the processes at the LSO but it is largely ignored, check out section 4 of the Law Society Act and compare what you read there to what you see happening at the LSO. I think it is time we made some changes in the complaint process at the LSO. Unfortunately, I have spent a lot of time there. We suffer from a lack of transparency in the complaint process. If you get a complaint against you, you could be in serious trouble. Read on!
Also, what happened to the gains Harvey Strosberg put in place when he was the Treasurer? Harvey’s daughter Elaine a prosecutor at the LSO is one of the finest lawyers I ever met. Where is the money of which we have less and less, the money we pay to the LSO being spent? My first guess is to firms based in the USA, 2 that I know of. One of them does the streaming for CPD, another is running the Bencher Election for the LSO (at 40% premium) finally, ( for today anyway). And why does the LSO hire a firm to charge me money to obtain the list of emails for other lawyers in Ontario, so I can announce my candidacy as a bencher? Not one lawyer in Thunder Bay or Dryden, Kenora knows about me. But when I was allowed to be in the LRS Ihad clients in Red Lake, and Ear Falls, have you ever heard of those places, north of Vermillion Bay on the Trans-Canada Highway? I interviewed 1600 referrals a year for the LRS. I put estates together for families that could not afford lawyers; I assembled a criminal defence for a soldier in Petawawa; I have a class action I gained from the LRS. 26 Rogues from Montreal stole 3.5 million from 130 Ontarians. The police would not investigate further than justifying why they would not charge them. The LRS has been my single biggest benefactor as a lawyer. 1600 people a year and only one complaint that I had to resolve myself.
We are going to see a large increase in your premiums if things are not turned around, and quickly. I am not the best-liked person in and outside of the LSO. It is the price I pay for the personality God gave me. I figure if the Almighty made me this way he will keep me this way. Thankfully, I have never had a lot of friends, just a few, my wife mainly. I remember when I was in jail, the guards liked me, actually, it was the guards that organized my release, so I have learned to keep my eyes open because God that put me in touch with one of his Angels, who got me sober and into this profession, will keep me here, so I don't worry too much about what people say about me or what they think about me. I have created enemies in the legal profession, in particular several Judges, but others like me. Two of my classmates are Judges.
But when it came to curbing “ideological imperatives,” reducing “budgetary excess,” and promoting transparency, she says that the slate faced opposition “at every turn.”
You betcha. Because that is where the real fight is. The status quo wants to co-opt the new benchers into defending their excess. That is the ugly side of being a bencher. Being somebody's co-opted friend at convocation does not assist the thousands of other lawyers who depend on the benchers to regulate the LSO in a manner that they would like to be regulated. Budgetary excess is evident in this election James Varo announces that he has hired a firm to sell us the addresses of our colleagues and Compuserve another US firm that has an office in Toronto is running the election. If you look in another direction you will find Peach Tree from the USA streaming for the CPD department. These corporations are feeding on us. Licking their lips with the profits they take from us. This is the tip of the iceberg. Stand up and say no! enough already!, no more!! we have people in Canada that can do it or that can be taught to do it. How much is this election costing us, budgetary excess before our very eyes? Do not be afraid, speak up against what you believe is wrong.
